Nobody gets to tell you how to heal
Let me say this plainly. Nobody gets to tell you how to heal.
Not your family. Not your friends. Not the internet stranger in your comment section. Not even the people who love you most and mean well with every word they say. Nobody. Because nobody has walked in your shoes. Nobody has carried your specific weight, lived your specific story, or survived your specific version of hard. That means nobody gets to hand you a prescription for your recovery.
A Bird Started This…
A while back I posted a TikTok holding a bird that had knocked itself out after flying into a window. I practice Reiki. Energy work felt natural to me, so while I sat with that little bird as it recovered, I offered it Reiki.
The caption said birds can receive Reiki too. One of the comments I received came from my childhood best friend.
She loves Jesus with her whole heart. She is deeply rooted in her faith. I know with complete certainty her comment came from genuine care and love.
It said:
"This isn't the way." And I sat with that for a minute. She was not being cruel. She was not trying to hurt me. She was sharing something she genuinely believed. I understood that. But here is the thing. It might not be her way. That does not make it the wrong way. And it absolutely does not make it my wrong way.
The bird recovered, by the way.
Just because something works for one person does not mean it works for everyone. Just because something does not work for you does not mean it is not working for someone else.
We All Heal Differently Some people heal by going to church. Some people heal by going to therapy. Some people heal by running ten miles. Some people heal by sitting completely still. Some people heal by journaling at midnight. Some people heal by crying in the car. Some people heal by laughing so hard they forget what they were carrying. Some people heal by holding a bird. None of those paths are wrong.
They are not the way. They are simply ways. Walking helps some people. Fresh air helps some people. Movement helps some people. But if you have chronic pain, anxiety, exhaustion, trauma, or if you already tried walking and it touched absolutely nothing you were carrying, then someone else's answer might not fit your life. That does not mean you are doing healing wrong.
The people who rush to tell you how to heal usually fall into a few groups. Some genuinely found something that helped them and want to share it. Their hearts are good. Some become uncomfortable when your healing looks different from what they understand. Some people, whether they realize it or not, are attached to an older version of you. A smaller version. A version that feels more familiar.
Those are the ones to pay attention to. Because healing changes people. Nobody has walked your path
Nobody has lived your life exactly as you have. Nobody has felt what you felt. Nobody has lost what you lost. Nobody has survived what you survived in the exact way you survived it.
Your story is yours. Your healing is yours too. The timeline is yours. The pace is yours. The path is yours. You do not owe anyone an explanation for what helps you heal. You do not need to justify it. You only need to keep moving toward what is helping you breathe easier and carry less weight.
If something helps you heal in a healthy way, you do not need permission to keep going.
That comment did not damage anything between us. She knows me well enough to know I am going to do what I am going to do anyway. I know her well enough to know her words came from love. We can believe different things and still love each other. We can heal differently and both be healing.
I think that is pretty beautiful.
So here is where I land. Go to church. Go to therapy. Go to the woods. Hold a bird. Run ten miles. Sit completely still. Cry or scream in your car. Journal at midnight. Light a candle. Talk to someone. Say nothing for a while. Do what is helping you move through this. Not what looks right from the outside. Not what someone else swears worked for them.
What is helping you breathe and what is helping you move forward. That is your way and that is enough.
Nobody gets to tell you how to heal. Let me repeat that. Nobody gets to tell you how to heal. Not even the people who love you most.
